Senior Technician
Research focuses on analyzing Sea Surface Temperature (SST) trends along the South African coast. The work examines coastal SST variations, contributing to a better understanding of how climate change impacts marine ecosystems in this region. SST research is vital for climate science, as it provides data on oceanic temperature shifts, which affect local marine biodiversity and broader climate patterns.

Principal Researcher
My research focuses on understanding how phytoplankton are impacted by ocean biogeochemistry and how they in turn impact biogeochemical cycles. With an improved understanding of these mechanisms we can reduce the uncertainties associated with future projections of ocean productivity, which have increased between each intercomparison exercise. My approach to research combines in situ observations of ocean biogeochemisty from ships, high resolution observations using autonomous platforms, remote sensing observations and modelling outputs.
Jonathan Ward
Engineering Manager
Jonathan has over 13 years of experience in Science Support Engineering and has trained and led multi-disciplinary teams across Africa as well as Antarctica involved in deploying, maintaining and operating geophysical instrumentation networks and managing large and diverse data sets for users nationally and abroad. His specialised areas of study are in Radar, Remote Sensing, High-frequency Electromagnetics and Space Applications.
