Ria Olivier, Principal Investigator, Project Manager and Digital Archivist at Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA)

I focus on the improvement of processes and activities, as well as the on-time delivery of outputs, and I fulfil the role of digital archivist for the ALSA data repository. With over 30 years of experience in Information Sciences since beginning my career in 1982, I bring extensive expertise in information management. I have in-depth knowledge of South Africa’s involvement in the Antarctic region and specialise in data management within the Antarctic environment, with a focus on digital repositories, museums, and archives. I am highly motivated and passionate about the South African National Antarctic Programme – particularly the preservation of our history and its promotion to future generations of South Africans.

I visited Antarctica in 2019 and have been to all five Gateway Cities to Antarctica. I am honoured to have received the APECS Medal for Mentorship, and recently, the Social Impact Award for the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa by Stellenbosch University in 2024.
